The Department of Biology is a subunit of the School of Sciences at the University of Minho. Its mission is to create and transmit high quality knowledge in the field of Biology in an interdisciplinarity environment with other areas of Science. It has scientific, pedagogical and administrative autonomy, without prejudice to the competences of the management bodies of the School of Sciences and the University. The department has the following responsibilities:
a) Manage the human and material resources allocated to it, in close collaboration with associated research centers and groups, in order to guarantee their good performance;
b) Propose the creation, restructuring, suspension or termination of study cycles and courses that do not lead to a degree, within the scope of autonomous projects or involving other partners;
c) Define pedagogical guidelines and teaching methods and evaluation of teaching projects, ensuring scientific quality and providing the human and material resources necessary for their development;
d) Collaborate with the School's scientific council in the instruction of processes within the scope of competitions or academic tests, namely, ensuring independence and scientific quality;
e) Promote the scientific-pedagogical merit and professional qualifications of its members and collaborators;
f) Promote interdisciplinarity through collaboration with other organic subunits and entities, national or foreign;
g) Promote national and international cooperation and inclusion in national and international higher education networks in the defined fields of knowledge;
h) Promote and develop interaction projects with society, including the provision of services to the community.
The management of the Biology Department is ensured by the following bodies:
