The Department of Biology is an organic subunit of the School of Sciences of the University of Minho whose mission is to create and transmit knowledge in the field of Biology, in an environment of interdisciplinarity with other areas of Sciences. Its facilities are located at the Gualtar Campus, in Braga, where it has infrastructures and resources to support the activities its develops.
Valuing the experience and culture accumulated over the course of its existence, the activities of the Department of Biology have focused on the development of projects of a scientific-pedagogical and scientific-technological projects, including the organisation of undergraduate, master's and doctoral courses, participation in research programmes and in national and international exchange networks, in an intense interaction with society, in a spirit of sharing knowledge and promoting innovation.
Research activities are integrated in the Centre for Molecular and Environmental Biology, classified as Very Good by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), The department integrates a multidisciplinary team of researchers, benefiting from a close interaction between biologists, biochemists, chemists, mathematicians, pharmacists and engineers.
Biological Sciences, in their fundamental and applied aspects, are at the root of the scientific research developed in the department, being mainly oriented to the following areas:
